Cape Town Concert Series: 2020 Season 1

Dear Music Lovers

Thank you for all your support during 2019.  I cannot quite believe that we are already into December!

As always, it is an exciting challenge to secure the very finest artists available for the Cape Town Concert Series – many of whom are busy with programmes and bookings in advance of two years or more.  Each year I say we have the best yet, but somehow I feel the season ahead really will be hard to beat!  It is not just the artists that make the series special – all the concerts take place in the Baxter Concert Hall, considered to be one of the finest in the country and our pianists make use of our 1961 Steinway Grand Piano serviced by Ian Burgess-Simpson.

22 February, 7.30pm: VIOLIN & PIANO with AVIGAIL BUSHAKEWITZ and ALBIE VAN SCHALKWYK
Avigail very kindly agreed to perform this recital with Albie exclusively for the Concert Series during a private visit to South Africa in February.  Their programme will be: Hahn – Sonata for Violin and Piano, Korngold – Much Ado About NothingVice by Matthijs van Dijk and, to celebrate the 250th Beethoven celebrations – the ‘Kreutzer’ Sonata.

21 March, 7.30pm: LGT YOUNG SOLOISTS ENSEMBLE  with ALEXANDER GILMAN
When violinist Alexander Gilman is not touring the world himself he, and his pianist wife Marina, are passionately involved in a mentorship programme for young talented musicians. When he performed for the concert series last February, a plan was hatched to return with an ensemble of 12 young musicians in order that they can share in the special experience of visiting and touring in South Africa, and he has spent 2019 tirelessly fundraising for this tour. Programme to be confirmed.

25 APRIL, 7.30pm: NATALIA LAVROVA – VASSILY PRIMAKOV PIANO DUO
We welcome the return of this special piano duo who also love performing in South Africa. Their programme for two pianos will include their own transcription of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony Number 6. Other works include:  Mozart’s Sonata for Two Pianos in D major, Saint-Saëns Variations on a theme by Beethoven, Op.35 and Grab Anderson’s Carmen Fantasy.

23 MAY, 7.30pm: UBUNTU CELEBRITY RECITAL
The Ubuntu Ensemble is a collective of  some South Africa’s finest musicians working overseas, brought together by bassist Leon Bosch. For this concert South African pianist François du Toit will join violinist Sarah Oates on violin, with Louise Lansdown – viola, Rudi de Groote – cello and Leon Bosch – double bass.  Their programme will be: Mozart’s Piano Quartet in G minor, Matthjis van Dijk – But all I wanna do is Dance and The ‘Trout’ quintet by Schubert.  This truly is a Celebrity concert, which is hosted by the Kramer Jubilee Trust to help raise funds for the longevity of the Concert Series.

13 JUNE, 3.00pmWINTER MATINÉE with BRYAN WALLICK, piano
Our annual matinee concert at 3pm features American pianist Bryan Wallick – who has often collaborated with other musicians, but has not performed a solo recital for the series in 10 years. Programme to be announced.

To book a subscription pass for all 5 concerts will cost R850 per person. Banking details below.  Individual ticket sales will open at Webtickets on January 15th.

Why not also give the gift of music this season and buy a season ticket for your family and friends. Email me if you would like more information or if you would like a gift voucher made up.

We look forward to welcoming you to the Concert Series in 2020.  As always, if you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Kind regards
