Gina Beukes – violin/viola and Esthea Kruger – Piano

GINA BEUKES RETURNS TO CAPE TOWN FOR ONE NIGHT ONLYChopin, a Lover, a War and an Astronaut  for Woman’s Day!  Violinist/violist  Gina Beukes, currently solo violist at Opera Ballet Vlaanderen in Belgium, is home for a unique multi-media recital.  She’ll be partnered by pianist Esthea Kruger in a programme of works for violin, viola and piano written by or for women on the Cape Town Concert Series stage on Saturday, August 10, at the Baxter Concert Hall at 19:30.This storytelling presentation will lead from Chopin’s lover Georges Sand through to the first woman to go into space alongside video footage of historic women.   Music will be appropriate to the story which will be in Gina’s inimitable style.  This will be her only appearance in Cape Town, her first in more than two decades.
Gina, formerly concertmaster of the CTSO and Principal second violin of the London Philharmonic and violist in the London Symphony,  graduated from the Juilliard with a MMus.  She  plays on a violin which is a copy of the ‘Emperor’ Stradivarius which was owned by the violinist Kubelika at the turn of the last century. She also has a viola which she acquired from violinist Roby Lakatos’ world-famous gypsy band.

She is partnered by Esthea Kruger, a prizewinning South African pianist who was awarded her doctorate from the University of North Texas and a second master’s degree in Germany recently appointed to the teaching staff of the  SA College of Music.

This concert is dedicated to the memory of Huberte Rupert,  the philanthropist whose wonderful generosity enabled many South Africa artists to become celebrated performers.  The Rupert Music Foundation has also made it possible for chamber music to take place on the Cape Town Concert Series’ recital platform for many many years.
