“LEARNING TO LIVE MUSIC” Winter School
Student and Teacher Educational Pro Series & Performance Electives presented by top Berklee City Music Tutors

After the success of the first winter school programme held in Stellenbosch in 2017, the Cape Town Music Academy (CTMA) has once again partnered with Berklee College of Music (Boston USA) and Stellenbosch University Unit for Community Music to bring to Cape Town 6 of their top Berklee City Music Tutors to present a week long focused workshop in various aspects of jazz music. This year we are also adding an optional Hip Hop component, looking at the influence and collaboration between these two music styles.
There are varoius categories available for participants:
1. School learners/ensembles;
3. Professional Teachers/Mentors;
4. Professional Musicians & HIPHOP artists.
The course is available to all qualifying participants.
What to expect
True to Berklee City Music’s holistic approach, the “Learning to Live Music,” is designed to expand each participant’s knowledge base and vision for use of their authentic voice through music cultural infusion, improvisation, study in music literacy and technology, as well as performance and career applications in music.
Berklee City Music fully immerses students in their music making to inspire the student voice/self-identity with professional purpose through an exploration of music’s social cultural context, and with observations, study and practice in jazz, this culminates into an opportunity for reflection and a community wide performance.
Mentor participants will be engaged in strategies to bolster their own teaching programs, personal development as a musician and tutor, and skills in working with youths. The series will award Mentors with access to contemporary popular music pedagogies and methods, and establishing site trainers for sustained instruction using PULSE Music Method (Berklee’s online music archive and curriculum) as an instructional tool for continued depth and growth as teachers.
For school learners and their teachers, a one day workshop will be held on Saturday 15 June.
For students in jazz, professionals, lecturers, teachers and mentors, a four day workshop will be held Monday 17- Thursday 20 June.
Evening activities include a voluntary jam session and music documentary screening and the series will conclude with a public concert at the Conserve on the final (Thursday) evening.
Who are the tutors?
The multi Grammy winning musician and producer, Prof Prince Charles Alexander will again be coming to inspire participants with his electives on music production and Berklee Vice President and head of City Music, Krystal Banfield, will again give instruction in PULSE (https://pulse.berklee.edu/).
Prof Ron Mahdi (bass) and Chris Rivelli (drums) return to lead and instruct ensembles together with newcomers Leo Blanco (piano) and vocalist and Hip Hop producer, Danielle Scott.
Additional contributing tutors will be Skyped in including award winning music film maker Michael Shore, well known musicians Fraser Boy and Al Kapone. Shore’s winning film Take me to the River, which follows jazz from New Orleans into current Hip Hop, will also be screened.

The course runs full days. Daily lunches will be provided as well as dinner on Thursday night before the concert. The course is free of charge. A R100 registration fee is required. PLACES ARE LIMITED. Once we receive your your details and registration fee your place is booked!
