LESIBA DREAMS

Tales from the Mountain Kingdom

Lesiba Dreams is inspired by the artistic legacy of Lesotho sculptor Samuel Makoanyane (1909-1944), who for most of his life lived in the village of Koalabata, in the Teyateyaneng district near Maseru. It evokes the lore and tales of Lesotho as depicted in the exquisitely detailed clay figurines Makoanyane created throughout his life.

For this concert the UCT Ibuyambo Orchestra, along with invited guests from Lesotho and Uganda, blend the sounds of lesiba, segankuru, endingidi and adungu in a unique pan-African musical and dance setting.

MOZART

COSÌ FAN TUTTE

UCT SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Così fan tutte, literally, “Thus do all (women) do”, or, sometimes, “The School for Lovers”, is one of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s great comic works. It argues all women are ultimately fickle in love, and is balanced between a story of comic improbability based on clever disguises, and a more serious, even cynical, commentary on the inevitability of human frailty. In brief, two young naval officers,

Ferrando and Guglielmo, boast that their girlfriends will remain loyal to them no matter what happens. Their older friend, Don Alfonso, conspires to prove the two young men to be wrong in their innocent boasts.

This production is directed by Steven Stead and features the Cape Town Opera Young Artists and the talented singers from the UCT Opera School. The UCT Symphony Orchestra will be conducted by Jeremy Silver.

Sponsored by the Rupert Music Foundation and the UCT Opera School.

FUJITO

The Fisherman’s Dream

Elements of Makonde Drum-Dance and Japanese Noh Drama are brought together in the context of a narrative tale in which the UCT Ibuyambo Orchestra re-tells a masked theatre classic by legendary 14th-century Noh dramatist Zeami Motokiyo.

The story of the hapless fisherman Fujito is re-imagined as a modern African tale in the masked tradition of Mapiko, realized against the sound-tapestry of drum-dance, flute, musical bow and mbira music of various regions in Africa.
