Stellenbosch Conservatoire News November 2020

Bringing artists and audiences together to experience live performances is at the heart of what we do at the Music Department at Stellenbosch University. Nurturing young talent and showcasing the rich diversity of our creative arts remains our number one priority.

As you know, the effects of Covid-19 have disrupted many plans and expectations. In 2020, since we were unable to resume our usual concerts at the Konservatorium, we explored multiple ways to keep the music going and to keep us connected, by streaming free digital concerts, increasing our social media presence on both Facebook and Instagram, and by developing content for our new YouTube channel. Since the Level 1 restrictions were announced, we have been able to host in-person free lunch hour concerts by reducing audience capacity to accommodate social distancing for patrons and hosting concerts featuring smaller ensembles to facilitate social distancing on stage. We are now hopeful that 2021 can hold more concert activity – within the given health and safety guidelines.

Without the support of those who share our love for music and a desire to supporting the growth of young South African musicians, the Music Department would be hard-pressed to achieve its mission. More than anything we want to thank you for your continued support during these challenging times.

We will be sending you more details about our plans for 2021 in the new year. We cannot wait to be reunited with our audience and artists and we look forward to seeing you again at the Endler Hall.

Until then, stay well.
Yours in Music,

Fiona
Artistic Manager

Musikale groete

Concerts Connect
presents
Zorada Temmingh in a live organ concert on 22 November 2020 at 15:00 from the magnificent Moederkerk in Stellenbosch. For the first time, Concerts Connect will present this concert to a live audience in Moederkerk as well as stream the concert live to an online audience in real time.

Zorada Temmingh is considered one of South Africa’s foremost organ improvisers. In addition to being the first South African to release a CD with organ improvisations, she was also the first to do soundtrack improvisations for silent movies. Zorada will present a programme of her own improvisations on well-known and much-loved Christmas Carols. The programme will also include a Partita on ‘God is Liefde’ (God is Love) and ‘The Hunchback Suite’ which contains the main themes from her soundtrack improvisation for the silent movie “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”.

Tickets are available through Quicket (www.quicket.co.za). Purchase your ticket to either the in-person live performance or the online livestream performance by selecting the appropriate ticket category. Both the live in-person and online concert will start at 15:00. The livestream will be available for 72 hours from the start of the concert.

SICMF mourns the loss of a great artist

On Sunday 8 November musicians around the world learned with shock and disbelief that cellist extraordinaire, Alexander Buzlov had passed away. He was just 37 years old. This humble musician, in demand across the globe for his supreme mastery of the cello, was a special presence at the SICMF for several years running.

Alexander was an extremely likable person whose kind and gentle demeanor combined with a captivating presence on stage saw him revered and befriended around the world. Social media has exploded with tributes, images and recordings of this truly sublime musician.

Many South Africans are amongst those who have lost a mentor, a chamber music partner and a friend. Alexander leaves behind his wife, Alissa Margulis and their daughter Amalia. On behalf of the staff and students of the SICMF, the management of the SICMF would like to offer their deepest sympathies and condolences to the family and friends of Sasha, Alissa and Amalia at this most difficult time.

Director | Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival

SICMF Full steam ahead in 2021

The Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival will host its 17th incarnation from 28 July to 6 Aug at the Stellenbosch Konservatorium. Whilst concert series and festivals alike are cautious to commit to future endeavours in the near future, the management of the SICMF is confident that a 10 day SICMF will take place in 2021.

The SICMF has traditionally taken place from a Friday to a Sunday 10 days later, the 2021 dates (Wednesday to Friday) have been chosen to accommodate the extraordinary university calendar as a result of the Covid 19 pandemic. SICMF management will closely monitor pandemic developments, and contingency plans with regard to socially distant student accommodation and hall seating for both performers and audience are already in the planning.

Much of the magic planned for 2020 will simply be deferred to 2021. Festival Director, Peter Martens, says, “The absence of live music will never be the new normal. Yes – the world has endured a travesty, and we may well have to endure more. But our profession has suffered through war and disease throughout history, emerging vigorously charged for a comeback every time. Our generation will be no different…”

Students who signed up for the 2020 SICMF and did not request a refund will automatically qualify for 2021 participation at no extra cost. Keep an eye on our website www.sicmf.co.za and Facebook page for details of 2021 student registration, faculty bios and additional SICMF news.
