Cello lecturer, Dr Peter Martens, was recently gifted with a large original painting by a retired cellist, Helen Mary Crawford, now 82 years old. Helen was a cellist in Johannesburg and the second pupil of Betty Pack. Our beloved Marian Lewin, recipient of Stellenbosch University’s Parnassus Award who recently passed away was the first. Helen who at the age of 26, posed for the artist Emiel Hartman in London with her 1907 French Caressa cello is the subject of the donated artwork.

Helen Crawford (neé Sholto-Douglas) studied in Amsterdam with Karl van Leeuwen-Boomkamp and then in London with William Pleeth. On her return from Europe in 1951 she joined the then Cape Town Municipal Orchestra and was appointed junior lecturer at the South African College of Music at UCT under Prof Chisholm.

The artist Emile Hartman was born in South Africa and lived in London. In 1959, he was awarded a large sum of money for being the first human to become airborne using only pedal power. He was known as the Birdman because the craft he designed, a small plane known as an ornithopter, had wings like a bird that flapped as he pedalled! According to Ms Crawford, his painting technique displayed in this portrait was much admired by fellow artists.

The life size portrait, recently framed by a supporter of the SU Department of Music, will hang in the cello studio of Dr Peter Martens and Mrs Babette Roosenschoon.

Volgens Me Crawford was sy skilderkuns hoogaangeskrewe by sy tydgenote.
