Thank You

As we continue to celebrate the Stellenbosch University Centennial we are keenly aware of the legacy that individuals and communities create for future generations. As part of the 2019 US Woordfees and in Season 1 of the Endler Concert Series, we celebrated the legacy of legendary soprano Nellie du Toit and flute doyenne, Éva Tamássy who were both gifted mentors to many of our students. We also celebrated the 10th anniversary of the SU Jazz Band and the 20th anniversary of the Music Department’s Certificate Programme and in so doing, marked the milestones of two initiatives which, above and beyond their academic and artistic merit, have contributed greatly in the past decades to the transformation and rejuvenation of the Music Department at large. In concerts we are keenly aware of the legacy of great composers and musicians whose art continues to inspire us and meets our collective deep abiding passion and need for art –  be this as artist, as academic, or as audience. What a privilege to be a part of this legacy!

As we reflect on the past year of the Endler Concert Series, we celebrate the many exceptional artists both local and from around the world that have performed on the Endler stage, soloists: Olga Kern, Megan-Geoffrey Prins, Francois du Toit, Albie van Schalkwyk, Luis Magalhães, Nina Schumann, Bryan Wallick, José Dias, Pieter Grobler, Christopher Duigan (piano); Pieter Schoeman, Suzanne Martens (violin); Alexander Ramm, Peter Martens, Anmari van der Westhuizen (cello); David Salleras (saxophone); Lazslo Kuti (clarinet); Mario Nell, Winand Grundling (organ); Lauren Dasappa (soprano); Jolene McCleland (mezzo soprano); Tutu Puoane, Anneli Kamfer, Natalie Rungan, Amanda Tiffin (jazz singers); and rising South African stars: Emilio Lorenzo, Dylan Tabisher, Cherilee Adams (marimba & percussion). Our Music Department students have excelled in the various ensemble performances of the SU Chamber Choir, Schola Cantorum, SU Symphony Orchestra, SU Symphonic Wind Ensemble, SU Jazz Band, and the SU Camerata. Our student composers have showcased their creativity and innovation in the KOMPOS concerts. We have also been fortunate to host international touring choirs: Lund University Choir from Sweden and the Cologne Cathedral Girls Choir from Germany as well as our own local choirs: Stellenbosch University Choir, Canticum Novum and the Libertas Choir. Our Lunch Hour Series of free concerts has hosted over 40 concerts involving our own student performances as well as visiting artists.

Our students have been fortunate to receive masterclasses from international artists and pedagogues: Andrea Katzel, Bo Rosenkull (voice), Olga Kern (piano), David Salleras (saxophone), Lazslo Kuti (clarinet), Gary Hoffman (cello), Cecilia Martin-Löf, Patrik Andersson, Oliver Sperling (choral conducting), and Raphael Pouget (natural trumpet).

Without the support of those who share our love for music, our commitment to excellence, innovation and community engagement, and to supporting the growth of young South African musicians, the Endler Concert Series would be hard-pressed to achieve its mission. We extend our grateful thanks to the many individuals, subscribers and entities who offer financial support and gifts-in-kind.

Bedankings
