Stellenbosch Conservatorium – May 2020 News

Dear Friends,

You are no doubt aware that this is a difficult time for performing artists in South Africa and indeed the world. Online teaching and learning are the new normal for our Konservatorium and we are now looking at how we can engage with students and the concert-going public in this period of little contact and maintain a sense of community amongst the student body and you our appreciative public.

Our students and many musicians worldwide are streaming live performances and posting recordings from their homes, and although we believe that there really is no substitute for live performances, for now we need to engage through this virtual “virus-free” world to satisfy our collective appetite for music.

We have come up with some online ideas as we try to realign our community to meet new challenges and serve our students and our loyal concert-goers in a uniquely uplifting and positive way. Please subscribe to our new YouTube channel (sukonservatorium), like our Facebook page, and follow us on Instagram for our #inspiringstudents, #inspiringalumni, #inspiringlecturers, #mondaymotivation, and #throwbackthursday campaigns!

You too can participate by sending us a message for our SU students if you feel inspired, and I will post this to them with encouragement from you!

We invite your feedback and your suggestions – much of the rest of the year’s live concerts will depend on how the current situation develops. In the meantime, we thank you for your continued support and wish you and your loved ones all the best in these uncertain times.

Yours in Music
Fiona

Beste Musiekvriende,

Musikale groete

Between January and May 2020, Féroll-Jon Davids, had the privilege of attending a semester exchange at Montana State University (MSU), a partner university of Stellenbosch University, in Bozeman, Montana, USA. Under the tutelage of clarinet professor Dr Gregory Young, he completed a number of practical courses: Applied Lessons, Clarinet Pedagogy, Clarinet Ensemble, and Clarinet Chamber Music. He was also enrolled for Music History (20th & 21st Century) and was a member of the MSU Wind Symphony.

Before the rigid social distancing regulations were implemented during March, Féroll-Jon co-founded the Symbiotic Duo with flutist Megan Makeever-Ali. Together they had quite the line-up of performance opportunities at prestigious ceremonies and events, however, as with the rest of the entertainment industry, many of their scheduled performances were cancelled. Nevertheless, this did not stop them from making music, albeit over the virtual plains! See their online performance of Beethoven’s Rondo from Duo No. 1 in C major, WoO 27 for flute & clarinet (originally for clarinet & bassoon) here.

A pianist colleague, Thomas Thomas, pioneered the online concert platform – Bozeman Arts Live – for artists in and around the Bozeman area. On this platform, Féroll-Jon had his own individual concert. To view this concert click here.

At the start of the Covid-19 lockdown, Dr Peter Martens initiated a Bach challenge which he started by posting the Gigue of the 6th Bach Solo Suite on his Facebook timeline. All 36 movements of the Bach Solo Cello Suites were then posted (some of them more than once) with collaborating cellists from 4 continents! View here.
Peter also collaborated with South African violinist and concert master of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Pieter Schoeman, to record a video of the Handel / Halvorsen duo. It got over 2K views in 2 days. View here.

Kyk hier.
