Rol asseblief na onder vir Afrikaans

Though already 3 February, I am happy that I have the opportunity to send you the first 2019 Newsletter, the year the schools started so soon after New Year.

May 2019 be a good year for all music teachers and learners!

May it be the year that the value of a music book is treasured – those bright children faces we so often see, tightly pressing their new music books to their hearts.

Then my heart aches for those music learners who are deprived from this joy by adults that dish out photocopies. Children do not ask to receive photocopies. Recently a teacher proclaimed openly that only photocopies are used. At R150 for the original book, it adds up to more considering the time and effort the teacher takes to photocopy, bind, and motivate himself that it is the right thing to do. Photocopying is like corruption: one convinces oneself that it is fine.

Books are like children – it stays with you for life. Proof hereof are the boxes of music books people sometimes bring to Allmusic – free for anyone to take at will. Photocopies are never brought as they are worthless.

One of our clients recently remarked that it is good for music learners to visit a real music store. In this way they realize how much there still is to learn and discover.

At times Allmusic is filled with parents and their children – wonderful. The jokes, sharing of information, and the discussions on planning for the year are so encouraging for us that, apart from long hours at the beginning of the year, it all is worth it!

As for last year, Focus on Education is one of the legs during the week. Also offered is non-competitive teaching for the following instrumentalists: violin, viola, cello, flute and piano. Singing (Opera & Lied) and conducting are also offered.

We are convinced that it is important that learners should participate in musical activity. For this reason Winnie van der Walt will workshop every afternoon on music in the classroom. She uses the wonderful material of Music Room as a point of departure and enriches her classes with her exceptional style and lifelong experience. Anyone who has to teach Music as part of Arts and Culture will be well-equipped and will be renewed with motivation and creativity to have fun with their group lessons at school where their learners learn more about music.

Dr Liezl-Maret Jacobs leaves after Crescendo with her husband to Ireland.  We are looking forward to her classes on piano teaching method from beginner to advanced level. She shares her experience and insights on the development of piano playing in preparing lifelong musicians that stay active pianists.

So often young people stop playing after school because they hate the tension that is associated with piano playing – a result of our South African focus on exams. Last week, an American lady of about 35 year old, visited Allmusic to purchase piano music. As always, I asked on which level she plays. Reacting uncertain about my question, I asked “which was the last exam you played?”. She replied: “What do you mean?”, because in America (and Europe, for that matter), they practice pieces intended to be performed at concerts, and they endeavor to maintain this repertoire by continually returning to it, or adding new repertoire. Exams are simply not part of their normal music ‘curriculum’.

Among others, she purchased the Rachmaninoff Preludes and other advanced works…

New on our shelves

Piano Stories is an excellent new Trinity publication that offers funky and creative ideas to maintain interest in studying the present prescribed pieces from Initial to Grade 3.

Piano Dreams are wonderful solo and duet compositions for piano by the composer Anne Terzibaschitsch. She also composed fabulous teaching material for violin and cello, also available at Allmusic.

The new Keyboard and Singing Trinity exam books are in stock.

We have the complete piano oeuvre of June Armstrong in the store. Lovely different music for Eisteddfods and concerts. These books are graded in degree of difficulty. The duet book has one part which is easier than the other for learners who have varying technical abilities.

The Anglicized Piano Adventures is new on our shelves. These books, with the English terminology (American terms in brackets), were originally meant for England and its previous colonies. Allmusic negotiated with the publishers that these books may also be distributed through the South Africa retail avenues. The series combine the Lesson and Theory and Technique and Performance books. Some aspects are not as comprehensively developed as in the individual books. The Anglicized books are available to level 3.

Boeke is soos kinders – hulle bly jou lewe lank by jou.

Verlede week kom ‘n Amerikaanse dame, ek skat haar so 35 jaar oud, by Allmusic in op soek na klaviermusiek.

“which grade did your last play?”.    Sy antwoord “what do you mean?”

Die boeke kombineer Lesson and Theory en Technique and Performance.

Music is a language that binds us together with invisible fibers

Do not photocopy, for by NOT doing so, you create good music libraries that last a life time, and contribute towards sustaining the music publishers, composers and performers.
